Poker-inspired Party Themes for 2014
Spicing up the whole year with great party ideas

The popularity of 1920s Chicago was highlighted in last year’s critically acclaimed film The Great Gatsby. Its vintage theme was the trend in parties last year not only in America but all over Europe as well, including the UK and Ireland. Aside from jazz music, glimmering lights, and feathered hairpieces, another facet which received attention was the universal card game of poker. Around this time, poker had already made the rounds in London, Paris, and Dublin, but it was only starting its venture into America. Nightclubs, cargo ships, and gentlemen’s lounges were the usual settings for poker matches, unlike the usual loud and exuberant casinos of today.

Due to its elevated status nowadays, it’s not a big surprise that party themes are centering around the game of poker. This article puts together a list of some party ideas for poker-inspired parties suitable for various celebrations:

Poker Proms
One of the best themes for prom suggested by Seventeen Magazine was a casino theme. With people getting tired of dancing the night away, poker tables can be set up on the dance floor. The room should be covered in flashing lights reminiscent of Las Vegas. Jazz remixes may be played by the DJ, like those that are on loop in gaming establishments.

Poker Birthdays
Using this party theme will help you gather your friends together whilst enjoying one of your favorite pastimes. The card sport has been associated with suave and dapper gentlemen like James Bond, or with sexy and sultry ladies a la poker TV presenter Kara Scott. The party can be set out the way the prestigious World Poker Tour organizes its tournaments, with qualifying games before the main event. The birthday cake may be decorated with chocolate poker chips or candy resembling decks of cards.

Charity Poker Tournaments
Poker competitions with celebrities and other special guests have been gaining popularity as a way to raise money for charity. These are always well-attended because people are as enthusiastic about winning a heady game of poker as they are about donating for a good cause. In setting up this kind of charity event, one would need the participation of a good number of players – at least 5 for a small event and at least 10 for a larger one – who are fairly good at the game. Even though many participants turn out to be amateurs, your roster of good poker players will ensure that the event presents a good challenge for all of the guests.
